We found four rusty metal folding chairs at a car boot sale for £8. One can of hot pink spray paint later, they are the best thing on our balcony.

You’ll need

  • Metal chairs (thrifted is perfect)
  • Wire brush and sandpaper
  • Metal primer spray
  • Gloss spray paint in your loudest colour
  • Drop cloth and a mask

Steps

  1. Strip the rust. Wire-brush loose rust, then sand everything lightly.
  2. Clean. Wipe down with soapy water and let dry completely.
  3. Prime. One thin, even coat of metal primer.
  4. Spray in thin coats. Three light passes beat one heavy one — keep the can 25 cm away and keep it moving.
  5. Cure. Leave 24 hours before sitting down.

Pro tip

Paint the chairs a colour that clashes with your floor. Pink on black-and-white check is unbeatable.
